Foo Dog Brewing Company
Roar Like a Lion: A Narrative-Driven Venture Pitch
OVERVIEW:
Foo Dog Brewing Company was conceived as a premium craft brewery based in Southeast Columbus, Ohio. Originally born from a highly successful home-brewing operation, the founders sought to transition from a local favorite to a commercial contender.
The brand was built on the mythical "Foo Dog"—the Chinese guardian lion symbolizing strength, protection, and the perfect balance of Yin and Yang. This concept mirrored the brewery’s commitment to "hybrid" flavor profiles: beers that balanced aggressive, bold hops with refined, drinkable finishes. To secure the necessary capital for market entry, the team required a comprehensive brand identity and a "to-market" roadmap to present to potential investors and stakeholders.

INSIGHT:
The craft beer market is notoriously crowded; to secure investment, a brand cannot simply sell "good beer"—it must sell a "legend." The insight was to lean into the protective and auspicious nature of the Foo Dog to create a brand that felt both ancient and modern.
By assigning a distinct "Zodiac" personality to each brew—such as 'The Dragon' IPA or 'The Snake' Session IPA—we created a collectible, narrative-driven product line. This shifted the investor conversation from a simple retail play to a scalable lifestyle brand capable of fostering deep community loyalty and high-margin merchandise opportunities.
OBJECTIVE:
As the creative lead and designer, my objective was to build a "tangible reality" for the Foo Dog brand to facilitate high-level investor pitches. I was tasked with establishing a visual foundation that included a sophisticated primary identity, a versatile color palette, and a custom typographic library, which might resonate with consumers.
My role also involved the direction of a full-scale product launch, encompassing the label design for the flagship 'Dragon' IPA and the conceptual packaging for their full seasonal rotation.
To demonstrate market readiness, the team additionally began work on an integrated digital presence, a social media launch strategy, a curated line of apparel and merchandise, and participating in community-focused events (like Pelotonia) to generate interest in the brand.
RESULTS:
The resulting investor presentation and the foundational elements of the brand ecosystem provided a high-fidelity vision of Foo Dog Brewing’s commercial potential.
The venture was ultimately shelved due to the unprecedented economic challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic—which hampered the official product launch and the "Roar Like a Lion" initiative.
The project successfully demonstrated how a robust visual identity can transform a conceptual home-brew into a market-ready enterprise, positioned not just as a brewery, but as a community-centric cultural powerhouse.
