BACKGROUND:

Cathay Pacific engaged Alliance Data Card Services to discuss building a co-branded relationship, including their Cathay Dragon Rewards loyalty program for their valued airline customers.

Cathay Dragon at one time, was the regional subsidiary of Cathay Pacific (known as Dragonair until 2016, and eventually merged into Cathay Pacific in 2020). However, the US credit card program was branded under the parent company, Cathay Pacific Airways.

The Alliance Data Era (The "Cathay Pacific Airways Visa Card"):

  • For a period, the co-branded credit card for US residents was managed by Alliance Data (which spun off its consumer finance business as Synchrony Financial).

  • This card was known as the Cathay Pacific Airways Visa Credit Card.

  • It allowed US customers to earn Asia Miles, the rewards currency of the Cathay Pacific loyalty program, through their everyday spending.

Cathay Dragon was the name of the regional airline (now dissolved).

  • The credit card that had an association with Alliance Data (and later Synchrony) was the Cathay Pacific card, designed for US travelers to earn Asia Miles—the core loyalty currency for the entire Cathay Group.

  • This relationship evolved into the current Cathay World Elite Mastercard offered in the US.

The current Cathay loyalty program is simply called Cathay, which combines both the status-earning component (formerly Marco Polo Club) and the miles-earning component (Asia Miles) under one umbrella.
